Best VPN for China 2026
Which VPNs Actually Work?

Not all VPNs bypass the Great Firewall. Here's what works, what doesn't, and how to prepare before your trip.

⚠️ Critical: Install and test your VPN before arriving in China. Many VPN websites and app stores are blocked, making installation impossible after you land.

Why Most VPNs Fail in China

China's Great Firewall uses Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to detect and block VPN traffic. Standard VPN protocols (OpenVPN, IPSec, WireGuard) are easily identified. What works: obfuscated/stealth protocols that disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS or use proprietary anti-censorship technology.

The GFW also constantly updates. A VPN that works today might be blocked during major events (Party Congress, international summits, etc.). Always have a backup.

Top VPNs for China 2026 (Tested)

1

Astrill VPN

$15-30/month

The gold standard for China. Astrill's proprietary StealthVPN protocol (OpenWeb, OpenVPN over SSL) is specifically engineered to bypass the GFW. Has dedicated servers inside China for faster connections.

  • ✅ Most reliable — works 95%+ of the time
  • ✅ StealthVPN protocol evades DPI
  • ✅ Router support (protect all devices)
  • ❌ Expensive — $30/month for premium plan
  • ❌ UI is dated and clunky
2

LetsVPN

$3-8/month

The budget champion. LetsVPN is built by a team that lives in China and understands the GFW intimately. Simple app, fast speeds, dedicated China-optimized servers.

  • ✅ Very cheap — best value for short trips
  • ✅ China-optimized servers (low latency to HK/Tokyo/Seoul)
  • ✅ Simple one-tap interface
  • ❌ Smaller server network than big names
  • ❌ Limited advanced features (no split tunneling, kill switch can be buggy)
3

NordVPN

$3-13/month

NordVPN's obfuscated servers and NordLynx protocol work in China — sometimes. Not as reliable as Astrill or LetsVPN, but a strong all-rounder if China is just one stop on your trip. Their massive server network is a plus.

  • ✅ 6000+ servers worldwide
  • ✅ Obfuscated servers help bypass DPI
  • ✅ Includes threat protection, ad blocker, password manager
  • ❌ Hit-or-miss in China (connects ~60-70% of attempts)
  • ❌ Can get blocked during sensitive periods

VPNs That DON'T Work in China (Don't Bother)

Backup Option: Self-Hosted VPN

If you're technically inclined, set up your own Shadowsocks or V2Ray server on a VPS (DigitalOcean, Vultr — Singapore/Tokyo region). $5/month, works perfectly when configured correctly. The downside: you need to manage your own server and the GFW can still detect and block it.

💡 Pro Strategy: Install two VPNs. One as primary (Astrill or LetsVPN), one as backup (NordVPN or self-hosted V2Ray). Switch protocols if one gets blocked. Always test both before departure.

Setup Timeline (Before Your Trip)

  1. 2 weeks before: Choose your VPN, create account, install app
  2. 1 week before: Test on your home network. Connect to Asian servers (HK, Tokyo, Singapore) — these will give you the best speeds in China
  3. 3 days before: Download the VPN's APK/iOS file backup — app stores may not let you re-download in China
  4. Day before: Save VPN support email and alternative domain names (they frequently change)
  5. On arrival: Connect to VPN immediately after getting internet access
