Chongli Summer Travel Guide 2026: Beijing's 1-Hour 18°C Escape

The 2022 Winter Olympic town has reinvented itself as China's coolest summer playground — mountain biking down Olympic ski slopes, cable cars over alpine meadows, and more than 600 summer events. Here's the complete 2026 guide.

Here's the scene from mid-August 2026, straight from Chinese state media: at a national ski resort in Chongli (崇礼), riders from the United States, France, New Zealand and Thailand line up at the start gate of a downhill mountain-bike race. Up the mountain, the same cable cars that once hauled skiers now haul five bikes at a time to the summit. A New Zealand competitor calls the bike park "far beyond my imagination." A French racer says he came specifically for "the incredible mountain environment" — 18–20°C at the 8 a.m. start. An American visitor sums it up: "a perfect place to rest, far from the city's heat."

Chongli — the Hebei mountain town that hosted the snow events of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics — is having its breakout summer. It is the poster child of "China Cool", the 2026 travel trend pulling foreign visitors out of the city heat and into cool mountain towns. And the best part for you: it's about one hour from Beijing by high-speed rail, with a summer average temperature of just 18.4°C. No long-haul flight, no visa problem for most travelers, no 40°C pavement. Here's everything you need to plan it.

Why Chongli is suddenly a summer destination

For a decade, Chongli had one identity: ski town. It sits at 1,000–2,000 meters on the edge of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, with nine international-standard ski resorts and 219 runs — the largest ski cluster in northern China. Winter was everything.

Then the numbers flipped. In 2024, Chongli's summer visitors (4.3 million) surpassed its winter visitors (4.23 million) for the first time. In 2025, the town welcomed more than 10 million visitors and passed ¥10 billion in tourism revenue. The summer of 2026 is bigger still: more than 600 events and activities across the ski resorts — nearly double 2024's summer calendar — with races, festivals or concerts on almost every weekend from June through September.

What changed? Three things, all of them deliberate:

• The Olympics left usable infrastructure. Over five years, Chongli completed 39 venue renovation projects and activated 76 Olympic legacy assets. The National Biathlon Center became an outdoor adventure base, the National Cross-Country Center became a vehicle-racing park, and the Olympic Village became a study camp and training base. The Chongli Olympic Park drew 1.67 million visitors in 2025, up from 471,000 in 2023.
• The resorts stopped closing in May. Instead of going dormant, ski slopes became bike trails, sled runs, golf fairways and flower meadows — a model locals call "winter snow, summer ride" (冬雪夏骑).
• The climate sells itself. Summer averages 18.4°C with daytime highs around 24°C and nights dropping to 14–15°C. Forest coverage is 71.5%, and negative-oxygen-ion levels around 10,000/cm³ — ten times Beijing's. Travelers now call it "Little Switzerland on Beijing's doorstep."

Getting there: high-speed rail from Beijing

By train (recommended)

Take the Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed railway from Beijing North Station or Qinghe Station to Taizicheng Station (太子城) — the station built for the Olympics, right inside the resort zone. Fastest journeys are 50–70 minutes; a second-class ticket costs about ¥70–90. From the station, free shuttle buses run to the main resort towns (Thaiwoo, Fulong, Genting) in 7–15 minutes. A slower train continues to Chongli Station in the county town (~1.5 hours total).

Book tickets on the official 12306 app (English version available) or through Trip.com. Weekend trains to Chongli sell out fast in summer — book at least a few days ahead, and check the last return train if you're planning a day trip.

By car

Drive the Jingli Expressway from Beijing — about 2–2.5 hours, roughly ¥90 in tolls. Parking is free at the resort towns and EV charging is available. The drive is scenic, passing the famous spiral tunnel complex.

Visa & entry: yes, you can go visa-free

Chongli is an easy add-on to any Beijing trip, and for most readers no visa is needed:

• 30-day unilateral visa-free entry (35+ countries, extended through December 31, 2026): if your passport is on the list, you can travel anywhere in China — including Chongli — for up to 30 days, no transit ticket required.
• 240-hour (10-day) transit visa-free (57 countries after the August 2026 expansion): the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region is one designated zone and Hebei's coverage is the whole province — so Chongli is inside the allowed area. Fly into Beijing (PEK or PKX) with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country, and you have 10 days to combine the Great Wall, Forbidden City and a Chongli mountain weekend. Stay time counts from midnight after arrival, and you must exit via an eligible port within 240 hours.
• Everyone else: a standard L tourist visa covers it.

The headline act: mountain biking on ski slopes

If you do one thing in Chongli, make it the bikes. This is where the Olympic transformation is most spectacular.

Fulong Mountain Bike Park

Fulong Four Seasons Town's bike park is the anchor. Its 42 ski runs were re-greened and 12 of them became downhill trails totaling 27 kilometers — the same distance as its winter ski runs. Trails are graded from zero-basics to professional, so first-timers and World Cup hopefuls ride the same mountain. The park opened in May 2024 with 6 trails and 3 pump tracks; it has since become China's largest downhill bike park, and 8 mountain-bike technical centers are being built around it for structured coaching.

The star feature is the lift system: the winter chairlifts were upgraded to carry bikes, with each car holding five bikes and riders to the top — the exact thing that impressed the New Zealand pros this month. Day rates are roughly ¥380 if you bring your own bike (lift access included); rentals run from about ¥200–600 a day depending on bike class, with premium downhill kits costing more. Helmets and pads are mandatory on downhill trails — shops rent full protective gear and offer beginner instruction. Beyond the park: 200+ km of riding

• Baiqi town loop (86 km): the legendary mixed flat-and-climb road ride with mountain views at every turn.
• Wutong Avenue (17.8 km): a gentle, bike-friendly path — the beginner's entry point.
• Chongli–Chicheng route (~100 km): ride across to neighboring Chicheng county and finish with a hot-spring soak.
• In total, more than 200 km of curated road, mountain and downhill routes crisscross the district, and local shops (many converted from winter ski shops) handle rentals, repairs and trail maps.

Beyond the bikes: Thaiwoo, Fulong, Cuiyun & the Olympic Park

Not a rider? Chongli's summer menu is broad enough for hikers, families, foodies and photographers. The resorts all switch to "summer mode" from May 1.

Evenings are an event of their own: bonfires, live music, outdoor movies in the towns, the "Chongli Summer" cultural gala at Xue Ruyi, and genuinely dark skies — summer visitors regularly see the Milky Way with the naked eye, and several hotels keep telescopes for guests.

• June 25–29: World University Cycling Championship (Fulong) — first world-championship-level summer event ever held in Chongli.
• July 10: Chongli 168 Ultra Trail — the 10th anniversary edition drew 12,000 runners from 20+ countries; expect it again in 2027.
• July–August: Spartan Race, "Hood to Coast China" relay, Chongli 100 trail race, mountain-bike and gravel races most weekends.
• All summer: 600+ events including music festivals, food festivals, kids' camps and night markets — the resorts publish schedules on WeChat (ask your hotel to translate) and at tourist information points.

Chongli's food is hearty northern Hebei mountain fare:

• Youmian (oat) noodles — the local staple, served with rich meat sauces.
• Roast lamb leg and iron-pot stew — the classic group dinners (Chongli Dawei whole-roasted lamb is the famous one).
• Donkey burgers and wild mushroom dishes — hunt both down in the county town.
• Rongchen North Road food street in the county town — 30+ vendors from heritage snacks to late-night barbecue.

• Daytime ~24°C, nights 14–15°C — you will need a light jacket or fleece after sunset. Bring a blanket mentality: no A/C needed, windows open.
