Both big nights land on a Friday this season. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December and New Year's Day 2027 is Friday 1 January — with New Year's Eve on a Thursday, a trip over the second half of December ends in a three-day weekend for the price of one day off.
China is an odd and rewarding place for those two nights. Christmas is not a public holiday and nobody gets the 25th off, yet the country throws itself at the season commercially: malls build walk-through light installations, five-star hotels sell Christmas Eve buffets weeks ahead, theme parks stage snow parades. New Year's is a real holiday — one statutory day — but the countdown is quieter than Sydney or New York, with temple bells and ice parks doing the work fireworks do elsewhere.
This guide covers the dates, which cities are worth the flight, what is confirmed versus unannounced, and the ticket deadlines that decide whether you get there.
| Date | Day | What it is | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 December 2026 | Thursday | Christmas Eve (平安夜) | Peak hotel and restaurant night; book by early December |
| 25 December 2026 | Friday | Christmas Day (圣诞节) | Not a holiday. Offices, museums and trains run normally |
| 31 December 2026 | Thursday | New Year's Eve (跨年夜) | Countdowns, late transport, the year's tightest hotel pricing |
| 1 January 2027 | Friday | New Year's Day (元旦) | Statutory holiday — 1 day under State Council Decree No. 795 |
| 2-3 January 2027 | Sat-Sun | Weekend | Natural three-day break, no borrowed working days |
| 6 February 2027 | Saturday | Spring Festival (春节) | The real travel crunch, six weeks later |
One caution: the State Council's 2027 holiday notice had not been published as of 5 November 2026. The statutory entitlement is fixed — 13 days a year under the revised Measures for Public Holidays and Memorial Days — but the off-day grid, including any make-up working Saturdays, comes from that notice. Since 1 January 2027 is a Friday, a clean three-day break is likely; treat it as expected, not confirmed. The full 2027 calendar is in our 2027 public holiday guide. And do not confuse the two New Years: 1 January is a one-day city holiday, 6 February a two-week national migration.
Christmas in mainland China is a retail and hospitality event, not a religious or family one. No day off, no national dinner, no expectation anyone will be home.
Do not plan this as a European Christmas-market city break. There is no medieval square with 200 wooden stalls, no atmosphere on the 25th, no Boxing Day. What China does brilliantly is scale — a 1.25-square-kilometre ice park, castle fireworks, a mountain of illuminated installations.
The 28th Harbin Ice and Snow World is the biggest edition ever built: 1.25 million square metres — a record — using 400,000 cubic metres of ice and snow across six sections of ice landscapes, rides, shows and services (CCTV, 12 October 2026). The headline partnership is with Disney China: a dedicated Frozen ice zone, announced in Xiamen on 14 October 2026.
Two things are not announced, and any guide giving you numbers is guessing: the opening date and the 2026-27 ticket price. The pattern is tight — the 27th edition opened at 10:00 on 17 December 2025 (Xinhua), and the three before it opened between 17 and 21 December — so plan to arrive from about 20 December with the first two days flexible. Last season's adult ticket was ¥328, concession ¥240.
Nor book a non-refundable late-February trip: a warm spell closed the park on 20-21 February 2026, reopening on the 22nd at a reduced ¥228 / ¥168 with refunds (Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism). Ice parks are weather-dependent. On the ground: −20°C after dark, a 521-metre 24-lane ice slide, a 120-metre Ferris wheel, lighting that only works after 16:30. Sun Island's snow sculptures and the Zhaolin Park lanterns are separate tickets; packing rules are in our winter travel guide.
Shanghai is the only Chinese city where the market format works at European scale, thanks to its expat base. The anchor is the Christkindlmarkt at Yuanmingyuan Road behind the northern Bund (Rockbund/外滩源), roughly 25 November to 27 December 2026 — listings differ by a day at each end: mulled wine, sausages, wooden toys, German-speaking stallholders. A Paulaner-run market runs 5-28 December; Jiashan Lane 20-21 December.
The bigger production is Shanghai Disney Resort: Disney Winter Frostival runs 19 November 2026 to 20 February 2027, with Christmas costumes from 1 December to 3 January, Mickey's tree-lighting ceremony, a Tree Trail and market in Disneytown, and — on 31 December and 1 January — a castle show, Ignite the New Year, built around the countdown (resort release, 4 November 2026). It is the most bookable Christmas product in mainland China.
There is no official fireworks display and no ball drop — just a very large crowd, a lit skyline, road closures and heavy policing. For a countdown with a show attached, buy a ticket. The Bund at 00:30, as the crowd thins, is the better visit.
Universal Beijing Resort's Winter Holiday ran 14 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 last season, with snow-dusted rooftops, a parade and evening shows; 2026-27 dates publish later. The Chaoyang International Light Festival turns the Liangma River and Solana (蓝色港湾) waterfront into the city's most photogenic winter walk — free, best after 18:00. And Mutianyu in snow is one of Asia's great winter photographs; in December you can have a watchtower to yourself.
For a New Year's Eve that is unmistakably Chinese, take the 25-minute train from Shanghai. Hanshan Temple — made famous by Zhang Ji's Tang poem about the midnight bell — rings 108 times on 31 December, with lantern displays across the Fengqiao area. Recent editions were real-name online reservation only, with a manual lane for foreign passports. Limited tickets, released early.
The opposite instinct also works. Sanya in late December is 27°C by day, about 20°C at night, and the resort strip runs beach dinners, pool parties and galas. Atlantis Sanya publishes a December programme each year — last season's Christmas market entry was ¥188 including six German beers, live bands and Santa. Pair it with the duty-free allowance: see our Hainan duty-free guide.
Typical late-December values, not a forecast: China in December is not one climate but four.
| City | Daytime high | Night low | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harbin | −12°C (10°F) | −23°C (−9°F) | Dry, still, painful on exposed skin; 3-4 layers plus a real down coat |
| Beijing | 2°C (36°F) | −7°C (19°F) | Bright, dry, wind is the enemy; best light of the year |
| Shanghai | 10°C (50°F) | 3°C (37°F) | Damp cold that works through clothing; little central heating |
| Suzhou / Hangzhou | 10°C (50°F) | 2°C (36°F) | Same damp cold, worse indoors; thermal base layers earn their place |
| Chengdu / Chongqing | 10°C (50°F) | 4°C (39°F) | Grey, damp, foggy; hotpot weather rather than sightseeing weather |
| Guangzhou / Shenzhen | 21°C (70°F) | 12°C (54°F) | Light jacket at night, shirts by day; the comfortable compromise |
| Sanya / Hainan | 27°C (81°F) | 20°C (68°F) | Beach weather; sea swimmable, evenings pleasant |
Northern heating runs hard — hotels and trains sit at 20-24°C — so removable layers matter more than the thickness of your warmest coat. Below −10°C a phone can lose 40% of its charge in twenty minutes; keep it in an inside pocket with a power bank.
Rail tickets bind, not flights. The 12306 presale window is 15 days including the travel date — verified live on 5 November 2026, selling through 19 November. Christmas Eve tickets release on 10 December, New Year's Day tickets on 18 December. Release times are staggered by station, and Harbin services sell out in minutes.
| Travel date | On sale from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 24 December 2026 | 10 December 2026 | Christmas Eve trains to Harbin; Shanghai-Suzhou-Hangzhou corridor |
| 25 December 2026 | 11 December 2026 | Friday services out of Beijing and Shanghai |
| 31 December 2026 | 17 December 2026 | The single most contested day of the season |
| 1 January 2027 | 18 December 2026 | New Year's Day, statutory holiday |
| 3 January 2027 | 20 December 2026 | Return leg of the long weekend |
Payment. Assume card-free. Alipay and WeChat Pay accept foreign Visa and Mastercard and work in every shop, taxi and ticket machine; cash works but slows you down. Set both up before flying, since verification needs your home number — see our foreign wallet QR guide, with the Nihao China app as backup. A travel eSIM solves data; hotel WiFi often asks for a Chinese number.
Midnight transport. On 31 December major cities extend metro last trains and add buses, and ride-hailing surges hard between 00:00 and 01:00. Pickup points near countdown venues close to vehicles, so walk two blocks before ordering, or pre-book a car through your hotel.
Trains over planes. Under five hours, rail beats flying in December: northern airports are the country's most delay-prone infrastructure in winter, while rail runs through snow with few interruptions. Overnight sleepers save a hotel night and wake you in Harbin — see the sleeper train guide; for arrivals, the winter schedule added 603 routes, covered in our flight guide.
Visitors are surprised twice — first that Chinese New Year is deafening, then that Christmas and New Year's Eve in the cities are almost silent.
The spectacle run (8 days): 20-23 December in Harbin — Ice-Snow World after dark, Sun Island sculptures, Zhaolin Park lanterns, Central Street. Fly to Shanghai on the 24th for Christmas Eve dinner in the former French Concession, the Christkindlmarkt on the 25th, Disney on the 26th-27th, home from Pudong.
The quiet run (6 days): 24-25 December in Shanghai — markets, Jing'an light installations, a hotel dinner. Suzhou on the 26th for the gardens, a museum day back in Shanghai, then Suzhou again on the 31st for the Hanshan Temple bells. Warmer, cheaper, no gear beyond a proper coat.

No. Christmas Day is a normal working day in mainland China; offices, banks and museums operate as usual. New Year's Day is a statutory holiday. Hong Kong and Macau do observe Christmas.
Almost certainly, but not confirmed. The 28th edition's opening date had not been announced as of 5 November 2026; the previous three seasons opened between 17 and 21 December. Book flexible dates and check the official announcement before committing to non-refundable travel.
Yes, on the day the window opens: 31 December tickets release on 17 December 2026. Harbin routes and the Shanghai-Suzhou-Hangzhou corridor sell out within minutes of each station's release time.
A down coat rated for −20°C, two sets of thermal base layers, waterproof boots with grip, wool socks, gloves plus a spare pair, a beanie, a scarf, and heat patches (暖宝宝). Keep your phone inside with a power bank. The ice park rents coats and boots.
Published 5 November 2026. Dates and prices were checked against operator and government announcements on the publication date. The Harbin opening date and 2026-27 ticket price, and the State Council's 2027 holiday notice, were unpublished at that time and are marked as such above.
