Hong Kong to Shenzhen Border Crossing Guide 2026: The New Huanggang Port and Every Other Way Across

NEW November 5, 2026 · 11 min read · Built on the 12 October 2026 opening of the rebuilt Huanggang Port, the Hong Kong Immigration Department's control-point list (updated 29 October 2026) and the Transport Department's published fares

For thirty-six years, crossing from Hong Kong to Shenzhen at Huanggang meant two buildings, two queues and a shuttle bus in between. That ended at 6:30am on 12 October 2026, when the rebuilt Huanggang Port opened as a single co-located building where Hong Kong and mainland officers sit behind the same row of counters and clear you in one pass.

The official target is a drop from about 30 minutes to roughly five, and self-service passengers are being clocked at around 20 seconds. On opening day the port handled 79,500 passenger trips and 8,000 vehicles between 6:30am and midnight, according to Shenzhen's Port Office — more than double the old crossing's typical Monday.

Huanggang is the only 24-hour passenger land crossing between the two cities, so the upgrade reshuffles the maths on every Hong Kong–Shenzhen trip. This guide compares all the crossings, explains what happens inside the new building, lists bus routes and fares on both sides, and covers the two things travellers get wrong most often: the visa question and APEC week road restrictions.

1. What Actually Changed on 12 October 2026

Huanggang has been the workhorse of the border since 1989, when it became China's first large land port with round-the-clock clearance; daily passengers peaked above 60,000, all funnelled through a temporary hall and Hong Kong's Lok Ma Chau road control point across the Shenzhen River. Reconstruction began in 2019 and produced a different category of building: 689,700 square metres over nine levels (five above ground, four below), described by Xinhua as the world's largest single-building land port complex. It has 202 passenger channels — 134 collaborative self-service lanes plus 68 manual counters — and 28 vehicle lanes, with design capacity of 200,000 passenger trips a day, rising to about 300,000 if the MTR Northern Link spur is built.

Four changes that matter to travellers

1. Two checks, one queue. The port uses co-location ("one place, two checks" / 一地两检) in a "collaborative inspection, joint clearance" mode (合作查验、一次放行): you present your document once, both sides verify in parallel, and you exit into the other city — no clearing Hong Kong, boarding a shuttle and clearing again.

2. The old Lok Ma Chau road control point is gone for passengers. Passenger services at Lok Ma Chau Control Point — the one that fed the old Huanggang hall — were suspended at 6:30am on 12 October, and the yellow shuttle bus (皇巴) that linked San Tin to the old port retired the same morning. Do not confuse it with Lok Ma Chau Spur Line / Futian Checkpoint, which is a separate rail crossing and still open 6:30am–10:30pm.

3. Huanggang is now passenger-only. Freight clearance stopped on 21 December 2025 under the "east in, east out; west in, west out" cargo policy, with goods traffic shifted to Shenzhen Bay and Liantang. Every truck you used to queue behind is gone.

4. The Shenzhen side has a metro in the basement. Line 7's Huanggang Checkpoint station (皇岗口岸) connects straight into the building; reporters timed the walk from the L5 arrivals hall to the metro concourse at about three minutes, entirely underground, against ten minutes over a footbridge before.

2. Every Hong Kong–Shenzhen Crossing, Compared

Hong Kong lists thirteen control points; six of them are practical for reaching Shenzhen. Hours below are the Immigration Department's, as published on 29 October 2026.

Sha Tau Kok is closed

The Immigration Department currently lists Sha Tau Kok Control Point as suspended "until further notice". Do not plan a route through it, and note that the Sha Tau Kok frontier area requires a closed-area permit regardless.

3. Crossing at the New Huanggang Port, Step by Step

Step 1: Get to the Hong Kong Port Area

There is no MTR station at Huanggang on the Hong Kong side, and the Transport Department confirms no public car park at the port — arrive by bus, coach or taxi. Two families of service serve it.

Franchised buses (Octopus, contactless card or exact fare):

Cross-border coaches run direct into the port's coach bays and operate 24 hours: Mong Kok HK$45–50, Tsuen Wan HK$45–48, Yau Ma Tei / Tsim Sha Tsui HK$50–55, Kwun Tong HK$55–60, Wan Chai HK$57–63 — usually the fastest option from the urban core after midnight. Green minibuses 44B, 44B1 and 78 cover Tuen Mun and Kam Sheung Road (HK$9.7–15.7), with overnight 79S, N44B and 616S. Urban and New Territories taxis pick up at the interchange; app-booked fleet taxis have a dedicated area, but pre-booked non-fleet taxis may not wait.

Step 2: Inside the building

The building is stacked, with Hong Kong and Shenzhen facilities on the same floors but separate zones. Departures from Hong Kong go up to L4 (Shenzhen's departure hall, Hong Kong's arrival hall); arrivals from Shenzhen come out on L5.

If you hold an ordinary foreign passport, use the 68 manual counters. The 134 collaborative e-channels are reserved for eligible Hong Kong residents who have enrolled in advance through the Immigration Department's "HK e-Channel" app — enrolment is not available to visitors, and the five-minute figure is an official target, not a promise at a manual counter on a Sunday evening.

Have your onward ticket or hotel booking ready. Officers on both sides can ask where you are going and when you are leaving, and the mainland side is the one that decides whether you may enter.

Step 3: Out on the Shenzhen side

From arrivals, take a lift down to B2 for the metro: Line 7 runs east–west across Futian with Huaqiangbei about three stops away, and fares start at ¥2. Octopus does not work on Shenzhen Metro — use the Alipay or WeChat transit QR code, a Shenzhen Tong card or the ticket machines.

Street level has a bus interchange on B1 and a taxi/ride-hailing area on B3: buses 23, 366, M169 and E25 by day, N68 and NA11 overnight, plus night routes T321 and T322. A free shuttle loops to Futian's commercial core — Convention Center, Ping An Finance Centre, Shopping Park and the One Avenue malls.

Driving across? Two things to know

Vehicles use 28 "five-in-one" joint lanes where one kiosk takes your temperature, documents and biometrics for both jurisdictions — the Transport Department says clearance drops from about ten minutes to 90 seconds, driver staying in the car. Passengers in private cars still get out and clear separately ("people and vehicles inspected separately"), so allow a few extra minutes.

4. Which Crossing Should You Use?

Your situationUseWhy
Landing at Hong Kong airport after 11pmHuanggang, or the airport ferry to ShekouOnly 24-hour land crossing; airport coaches run to it
Hotel in Futian CBD or HuaqiangbeiHuanggang or Futian (Spur Line)Line 7 / Line 4 put you in the district in minutes
Day trip to Luohu, Dongmen or low-cost shoppingLo WuEast Rail to the boundary, Line 1 onward; open to midnight
Heading to Shekou, Nanshan or the airportShenzhen Bay, or the ferry from Tsim Sha TsuiWestern corridor avoids a full cross-city transit
Onward to Guangzhou or beyondWest Kowloon high-speed railOne train, co-located clearance, no road border at all
Travelling with heavy luggage and kidsHuanggang (if staying in Futian) or the ferryOne building, lifts throughout, no footbridges
Chinese New Year, Golden Week or a holiday weekendWhichever is least crowded — check queues before leavingLo Wu and Futian develop long lines at peaks; Huanggang absorbs overflow

Practical trick: before you set out, check the Security Bureau's Easy Boundary queue page, which publishes estimated waiting times per control point and per direction. Twenty seconds of checking beats ninety minutes of standing.

5. The Visa Question: Can You Legally Enter Shenzhen?

This is where most independent travellers come unstuck. Hong Kong and the mainland run separate immigration systems. A 90-day Hong Kong visa-free stay, a working holiday visa or a Hong Kong ID card gives you no right to cross into Shenzhen. You need one of the following.

Your statusCan you enter Shenzhen?Notes
Citizen of one of China's unilateral visa-free countriesYes — up to 30 daysRoughly 50 countries on 30-day terms, including most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. For 48 of them the arrangement is currently dated to 31 December 2026; Russia runs to 31 December 2027 and Brunei has no end date. Verify your nationality on the National Immigration Administration site before booking 2027 travel.
Citizen of a 240-hour transit-eligible country, flying onward to a third countryYes — up to 240 hours57 countries, 65 ports, 24 provinces. You must hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and enter and exit through approved ports. Shenzhen is covered.
Doing Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong KongNo — not transitReturning to the same place you came from does not count as a transit. This trip needs a visa or visa-free eligibility.
Holding a valid Chinese tourist (L) or business (M) visaYesCheck the number of entries left, not just the expiry date.
Holding an APEC Business Travel CardYes, for the listed economiesCard validity and pre-clearance conditions apply.

Two administrative details catch people out. Since 20 November 2025 foreign travellers can file the arrival card online before landing. And every foreigner must be registered within 24 hours of arrival: hotels do it automatically, but in a private flat you must register online or at a police station yourself. Overstaying costs RMB 500 a day up to RMB 10,000, with possible detention, deportation and an entry ban — extend at the municipal exit-entry administration before your permitted stay runs out, not at the border on the way out.

6. Overnight Trips, Peak Days and APEC Week

The 24-hour advantage

Huanggang's real value is the hours nobody else keeps: Lo Wu, Futian, Man Kam To, Liantang and Shenzhen Bay all shut between 10pm and midnight, so land at Hong Kong airport at 1am and your choices are a coach to Huanggang, the airport ferry, or a very expensive hotel. Line 7 stops shortly before midnight, so a 2am arrival means a taxi from B3 or a night bus.

APEC week: 17–20 November 2026

Shenzhen hosts the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November 2026, and the city has published temporary traffic controls under Shenzhen Government Decision 深府〔2026〕63号 that run from 17 to 20 November.

For visitors: trains, metro, buses and ferries are unaffected (fares are discounted during the summit period), and Hong Kong-plated cars and cross-border coaches still cross — but a rented mainland car with a non-Shenzhen plate should not be driven into the city during those four days. Expect security checks and heavier hotel demand near the venues.

Holiday weekends behave differently

Chung Yeung, Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year turn the border into a queue. Shenzhen's border inspection authority expected 50,000–100,000 crossings a day in the port's first weeks, and on 19 October Hong Kong's Security Bureau warned of southbound surges with queues for onward buses after immigration. Cross before 9am or after 8pm, and buy your coach ticket before you clear.

7. Money, Mobile Data and Border Practicalities

Payment. Octopus works for Hong Kong buses and coaches but not in Shenzhen. On the mainland use Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card — both accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB, and Alipay's international version has an English interface. Keep ¥200–300 in cash.

Data. A Hong Kong SIM roaming into Shenzhen keeps you online with no firewall change, which is why many business travellers keep their home SIM on; a mainland eSIM is cheaper for longer stays. Download a mainland map app before you cross — Google Maps is unreliable for Shenzhen transit. See our eSIM guide.

Luggage and pets. There are no lockers inside the joint clearance hall; use left-luggage counters at Lo Wu or Futian, mall storage around Huanggang, or your hotel. Cats and dogs cannot walk through the passenger hall — only documented guide and hearing dogs are allowed, and animals otherwise travel under cargo and quarantine rules.

Duty-free and drones. The mainland allowance for a non-resident is 1.5 litres of alcohol above 12% ABV and 400 cigarettes. Do not fly a drone near the boundary: beyond the APEC restrictions, the border area is restricted airspace and Shenzhen requires registration for recreational drones.

8. Border Chinese Worth Knowing

Signage in the new building is bilingual, and officers at the counters deal with foreigners daily, but a few phrases help when a queue splits into lanes that are not signed in English.

9. FAQ

Is the new Huanggang Port open 24 hours?

Yes. Passenger and passenger-vehicle clearance runs around the clock, seven days a week, as it did at the old port. The Shenzhen-side metro does not: Line 7 at Huanggang Checkpoint closes before midnight, so late arrivals need a bus, taxi or ride-hailing car.

Did Lok Ma Chau Control Point close?

Only the road control point that served the old Huanggang hall — its passenger services were suspended on 12 October 2026. Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, which connects to Futian Checkpoint by East Rail, is a different crossing and remains open 6:30am–10:30pm.

Can foreigners use the new self-service lanes?

No. The 134 collaborative e-channels are for eligible Hong Kong residents who enrolled in advance via the HK e-Channel app. Foreign passport holders use the 68 manual counters. Budget more than five minutes at peak times.

Do I need a visa if I already have a Hong Kong visa?

Yes, unless you qualify for China's visa-free or 240-hour transit policies. Hong Kong and the mainland are separate immigration jurisdictions. A Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong trip is not a transit, so the 240-hour rule does not apply to it.

How long does the crossing actually take?

Officials target about five minutes, with self-service users clocked at roughly 20 seconds. Add time for the Hong Kong-side coach, and more at weekends and holidays: opening day saw 79,500 passenger trips, so the building absorbs volume well, but manual counters queue.

Can I drive a Hong Kong car to Shenzhen through Huanggang?

Dual-plate (粤Z) vehicles can, using the joint one-stop lanes: one kiosk collects both jurisdictions' data and clearance is quoted at about 90 seconds. Hong Kong-plated cars are also exempt from the APEC week restrictions that apply to non-Shenzhen mainland plates. Single-plate Hong Kong cars still need the relevant mainland permits and insurance.

What is the cheapest way from Hong Kong to Shenzhen?

Lo Wu or Futian by East Rail, then Shenzhen Metro. A Huanggang bus such as the B11 at HK$10.5 or the green minibus 78 at HK$9.7 is comparable, but the rail crossing avoids a second fare.

Is there a left-luggage facility at the port?

Not inside the joint clearance hall. Use left-luggage counters at Lo Wu or Futian, mall storage around Huanggang, or your hotel on either side.
