Why Altay & Kanas Are 2026's Breakout Destination
For years, international visitors to Xinjiang stopped at Urumqi, Turpan and Kashgar. The far north 鈥?the Altai Mountains along China's borders with Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia 鈥?stayed quietly off the foreign map. That changed fast in 2026.
According to Qunar's H1 2026 inbound tourism report (released July 10, 2026), foreign tourist flight bookings to Altay grew roughly 600% year-on-year 鈥?the single fastest-rising of China's "dark horse" destinations, and the city jumped 39 places in the inbound ranking. Across the first half of 2026, overseas visitors reached 160 Chinese cities, 20 more than a year earlier, with Altay, Qionghai, Heihe, Nyingchi and Yining all posting triple-digit growth.
The magnet is Kanas Lake (鍠€绾虫柉婀?: a glacial, opaque-turquoise lake ringed by Siberian spruce and, in autumn, blazing golden larches. Pair it with Hemu (绂炬湪鏉?, a wooden-cabin Tuva village famous for morning mist and the best sunrise photography in China, and you have a destination that feels more like Switzerland-meets-Siberia than the China most travelers imagine.
💡 Editor's note
This is a focused companion to our broader Xinjiang Travel Guide 2026. That guide covers the whole region (Kashgar, the Duku Highway, Turpan); this one goes deep on the Kanas鈥揂ltay corner that the 2026 inbound boom is all about.
Where Is Kanas? Geography of the Altai Edge
Kanas Lake sits in Burqin County (甯冨皵娲ュ幙), Altay Prefecture, the northernmost tip of Xinjiang. It lies in a U-shaped glacial valley of the Altai Mountains, fed by meltwater from surrounding peaks and drained by the Kanas River into the Irtysh basin. The lake itself sits at about 1,374 m above sea level; viewpoints above it climb past 2,000 m.
The wider area is a mosaic of protected land: Kanas National Geopark, the Hemu鈥揔anas鈥揃aihaba scenic zone, and farther southeast, the Keketuohai (Koktokay) National Geopark. Locals are a mix of Kazakhs, Mongols and the small Tuva minority 鈥?one of the few places in China where Tuva culture is visible to visitors.
Locals believe Kanas harbors a "lake monster" (姘存€?. The likely explanation is large taimen trout in the cold depths 鈥?but the legend is part of the place's mystique, and the Fish-Watching Pavilion was built precisely to scan for it.
Best Time to Visit Kanas (Month-by-Month)
Kanas is a seasonal destination. The scenic area's signature look 鈥?gold and ember larches against a blue lake 鈥?appears for only a few weeks. Plan around it.
| Window | Conditions | Crowds & Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Jun to Jul | Green valleys, wildflowers, cool (15鈥?5掳C days) | Moderate; great for hiking, fewer "gold" photos |
| Aug | Peak summer green, occasional rain | Busy; domestic family holiday month |
| Mid-Sep to early Oct | Golden larches, crisp air, first frosts | Best & busiest; book flights/lodging 1鈥? months ahead |
| Late Oct to Apr | Snow, sub-zero nights, some facilities closed | Very quiet; winter fairy-tale but limited access |
Verdict: If autumn color is your goal, target September 20 鈥?October 5. Go a week earlier and you may miss the peak; a week later and frost may have stripped the leaves. Read our Best Time to Visit China 2026 for region-by-region timing.
How to Get to Kanas & Altay
There is no high-speed rail to Kanas. The realistic routes all start with a flight into Xinjiang, then a transfer north.
Step 1 鈥?Reach Xinjiang's hub: 脺r眉mqi (URC)
- International: 脺r眉mqi Diwopu International Airport has direct flights from several Central Asian and Middle Eastern hubs, plus domestic connections from every major Chinese city.
- From Beijing/Shanghai/Chengdu/Xi'an: frequent daily flights (4鈥? hrs from the east coast).
Step 2 鈥?Fly or drive north to Altay
- Kanas Airport (KJI, 鍠€绾虫柉鏈哄満): Seasonal (roughly June鈥揙ctober). Direct flights from 脺r眉mqi and, in peak season, from Xi'an, Chengdu and Beijing. This is the closest airport to the lake 鈥?then it's a ~1.5鈥? hr scenic transfer to the Kanas entrance.
- Altay Xuedu Airport (AAT): Year-round. From Altay city it's a ~3.5鈥? hr drive (鈮?00 km) southwest to Kanas via Burqin.
- Long-distance bus: 脺r眉mqi 鈫?Burqin takes ~10鈥?2 hrs; doable as an overnight option but tiring.
Step 3 鈥?Inside the scenic area
Private cars are not allowed inside the Kanas鈥揌emu reserve. Everyone uses the park's shuttle buses (鐜繚杞?, included with your entry ticket, which link the entrance, the lake, the Three Bays, Hemu and Baihaba. Build transfer time into your plan 鈥?distances inside the park are short but the bus loops are not.
📍 Book transfers in advance
In autumn the airport shuttles and park buses fill up. Pre-book your airport鈫払urqin鈫扠anas transfer through your hotel or a licensed Xinjiang operator, especially if you don't speak Mandarin.
Top Things to Do in Kanas & Altay
1. Kanas Lake & the Fish-Watching Pavilion (瑙傞奔鍙?
The lake is the headline. For the best view, climb the 1,068 steps to the Fish-Watching Pavilion above the eastern shore 鈥?on a clear morning the whole lake unfurls below you in shifting shades of jade and cobalt. Allow 2鈥? hrs round trip.
2. The Three Bays (涓夋咕)
Along the Kanas River between the lake and the entrance sit three postcard viewpoints, best visited at sunrise:
- Wolong Bay (鍗ч緳婀? "Sleeping Dragon Bay"): a curved river island shaped like a dragon.
- Moon Bay (鏈堜寒婀?: the iconic crescent river bend 鈥?the most photographed spot in the park.
- Immortal Bay (绁炰粰婀? "Fairy Bay"): morning mist drifting over shallow, light-streaked water.
3. Hemu Village (绂炬湪鏉?
A Tuva village of weathered log cabins set in a birch-and-pine valley. Sunrise from the Hemu viewing platform 鈥?smoke curling from cabin chimneys under a pink sky 鈥?is the image that fills China's travel feeds. Horseback rides into the surrounding meadows are easy to arrange.
4. Baihaba Village (鐧藉搱宸存潙)
A remote, photogenic border village near Kazakhstan. Note: Baihaba sits in a border-control zone and requires a border defense permit (杈归槻璇?. Rules for foreign passport holders change, and issuance is not guaranteed 鈥?check current status with your hotel or the local Public Security Bureau before counting on it.
5. Keketuohai / Koktokay (鍙彲鎵樻捣)
South-east of Altay, this national geopark offers granite peaks, the headwaters of the Irtysh River, and a very different (drier, more dramatic) landscape. Best as a 1鈥? day add-on if you have extra time and a driver.
6. Autumn photography
Kanas in early October is a landscape-photographer's dream. Bring a wide lens for the bays, a telephoto for mist and wildlife, and dress warmly 鈥?dawn temperatures hover near freezing even when days are mild.
5-Day Kanas & Hemu Itinerary
Day 1 鈥?Arrive & acclimatize
- Fly to Kanas Airport (or Altay AAT), transfer to Burqin town.
- Evening stroll along the Burqin riverfront; try local grilled fish.
- Overnight Burqin (better value and warmer than inside the park).
Day 2 鈥?Kanas Lake
- Morning transfer into the Kanas scenic area; shuttle to the lake.
- Climb the Fish-Watching Pavilion; boat ride on the lake if weather allows.
- Afternoon at the Three Bays (Immortal Bay 鈫?Moon Bay 鈫?Wolong Bay).
- Overnight inside the Kanas area or back to Burqin.
Day 3 鈥?Hemu Village
- Shuttle/bus to Hemu; check in to a cabin guesthouse.
- Afternoon meadow walk or short horseback ride.
- Early night 鈥?you'll be up before dawn.
Day 4 鈥?Hemu sunrise & Birch Forest
- Pre-dawn climb to the Hemu viewing platform for sunrise and mist.
- Midday transfer back toward Burqin; optional Baihaba if permits align.
- Overnight Burqin.
Day 5 鈥?Depart or extend
- Fly out from Kanas/Altay, or begin a longer Xinjiang loop (脺r眉mqi, the Duku Highway, Kashgar).
- Optional Keketuohai add-on (+1鈥? days) for geologists and landscape fans.
Where to Stay
- Burqin town: The practical base. More hotel choice, lower prices, better food, and warmer than the mountain villages. Best for nights 1 and 4.
- Inside Kanas: Wooden lodges near the lake entrance. Atmospheric but pricey and cold at night; book months ahead for autumn.
- Hemu village: Tuva-style cabin guesthouses. Charming and quiet, with the sunrise platform on your doorstep 鈥?but facilities are basic and heating is essential.
🛏 Autumn booking rule
For an early-October trip, reserve lodging and the Kanas/Altay flights at least 4鈥? weeks ahead. Rooms inside the park sell out and prices triple in peak week.
Food & What to Eat
Altay's cuisine is hearty northern frontier food 鈥?a world away from Sichuan chili or Cantonese dim sum:
- Cold-water fish: Kanas trout and taimen grilled or braised; a local specialty in Burqin.
- Roast lamb & mutton stew: Kazakh-style, often cooked over open flame.
- Dairy: horse milk (koumiss), thick yogurt, and salty milk tea.
- Wild mushrooms & berries: foraged in autumn 鈥?ask before eating anything unknown.
- Breads: flat naan-style loaves from Uyghur and Kazakh bakeries.
Vegetarian and Western options are limited in the villages; if you have dietary needs, carry snacks from 脺r眉mqi or Burqin.
Practical Tips for Foreign Tourists
Permits & documents
- Carry your passport at all times 鈥?it's checked at park entrances and hotels.
- Kanas and Hemu are generally open to foreign visitors with a passport and standard registration.
- Baihaba needs a border permit and foreign access isn't guaranteed 鈥?verify locally before you go.
Payment
Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept international Visa/Mastercard, which covers most purchases in Burqin and the park. Still, carry some RMB cash 鈥?tiny village stalls and remote shuttle counters may be card-only-in-theory. See our Foreign Payment Guide 2026.
Connectivity
Mobile signal is patchy in the mountains and inside the park. Download offline maps before you leave 脺r眉mqi, and set up roaming or an eSIM for the towns. Don't rely on streaming at the viewpoints.
Weather, altitude & health
- Kanas is only ~1,374 m 鈥?no serious altitude sickness for most, but nights are cold year-round. Pack a warm layer even in summer.
- Autumn mornings drop near freezing; a hat, gloves and a insulated jacket are worth carrying.
- Sun is strong at altitude 鈥?bring sunscreen and sunglasses.
Safety & family
The area is safe and calm, but it's remote: distances are long, medical care is basic, and weather shifts fast. With kids, the 5-day plan above works if you keep transfers short and pack for cold nights 鈥?read our Family Travel Guide 2026 for the wider picture. Use licensed transport; don't self-drive the mountain roads in snow.

FAQ
Do I need a visa for Xinjiang?
Xinjiang follows national entry rules. Many visitors now enter China visa-free (30-day unilateral visa-free for eligible countries, or 240-hour transit visa-free). Kanas itself requires no special tourism visa beyond standard entry 鈥?only the Baihaba border permit is an extra local step. Check current eligibility before you fly.
Can I visit Kanas independently, or do I need a tour?
You can travel independently: fly in, use park shuttles, and stay in town or guesthouses. A local guide/driver helps most with language, transfers and the permit puzzle 鈥?but it's not mandatory.
Is Kanas worth it if I only have a week in China?
If autumn color and remote landscapes are your priority, yes 鈥?but it's a long haul from the east coast. Pair it with 脺r眉mqi, or save it for a Xinjiang-focused trip rather than a first-visit "greatest hits" tour.
When exactly is the autumn color peak?
Usually September 20 鈥?October 5, varying with altitude and first frost. Monitor local "color reports" in mid-September and book the later half of that window if you want the most reliable gold.
