Most foreign travelers route through Macau by accident: a ferry from Hong Kong, a day trip from Zhuhai, a stamp on the way to somewhere else. That is worth correcting. Macau is the easiest place in Greater China to enter, the cheapest to eat well, and in late November it hosts two events that fill every hotel room on the peninsula.
Macau recorded 32,181,272 visitor arrivals in the first nine months of 2026, up 8.5% year on year, with September alone up 15.9% to 3,216,535, per the Statistics and Census Service; international arrivals outside Greater China reached 1,949,417. The last two weeks of November are the tightest of the year. This guide covers who needs a visa, how Macau differs from the mainland at the immigration desk, how to move around for MOP 6, what the Grand Prix costs, what to eat, and a three-day route that does not waste a morning in a taxi queue.
Macau (澳门 — Àomén) is a Special Administrative Region of China, like Hong Kong, with its own immigration system, currency, traffic laws and tax regime: roughly 33 km² — smaller than Manhattan — and about 690,000 residents. The Historic Centre of Macao has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005: 22 buildings and 8 squares along a 1.3 km corridor from A-Ma Temple through Senado Square to the Ruins of St. Paul's. In 2017 UNESCO also made Macau a Creative City of Gastronomy, which is the bureaucratic way of saying the food is the reason to come.
Practical basics: the currency is the pataca (MOP); Cantonese and Portuguese are official, with Mandarin widely spoken and English common in hotels; the time zone is UTC+8 with no daylight saving; power is 220V with Type D/G/M plugs (British three-pin works); emergency is 999; tap water is not for drinking. November is one of the driest, most comfortable months — highs typically 23–25°C, low humidity, cool evenings.
This is where Macau beats the mainland for ease. The Public Security Police Force lists 88 nationalities exempt from a visa or entry permit. Hold a passport from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico, South Africa or any EU state and you walk up to the counter, get stamped, and go. The catch most guides miss is that stay length is not uniform:
| Passport holders | Visa-free stay |
|---|---|
| US, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, India, Brazil, most others | 30 days |
| EU / Schengen, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Serbia, Morocco, Uruguay and others | 90 days |
| United Kingdom (British passport) | 6 months |
| Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, New Zealand | 3 months |
| Brunei, Kazakhstan | 14 days |
| Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card / Re-entry Permit holders | 1 year |
Everyone else needs a visa, usually obtainable at the checkpoint's visa room: MOP 200 single-entry or MOP 300 multiple-entry per individual (MOP 400/600 per family passport, MOP 100/150 for children under 12, MOP 100/150 per person for groups of at least ten), granting up to 30 days. Six nationalities cannot use visa-on-arrival and must apply in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate: Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Macau is not covered by a mainland Chinese visa, and a mainland visa is not valid for Macau. Two consequences matter:
Your stay also cannot run past your passport's expiry (US consular guidance asks for 90 days' validity beyond departure), and the PSP expects proof of funds scaled to your stay — MOP 10,000 for 7–14 days, 15,000 for 14–21, 20,000 beyond; in practice a credit card is never questioned. Carrying MOP 120,000 or more in cash requires the red channel and a declaration.
| Port | Hours | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Macau International Airport (Taipa) | 24h | Flights from 39 destinations; LRT to Cotai |
| Outer Harbour / Taipa ferry terminals | 24h | Hong Kong ferries; Taipa is faster for Cotai hotels |
| Border Gate / Gongbei (关闸) | 06:00–01:00 | Walking from Zhuhai; busiest, avoid 17:00–20:00 |
| HZMB Macao port (港珠澳大桥) | 24h | Cheap 24-hour shuttle from Hong Kong |
| Hengqin port (横琴) | 24h | Chimelong; LRT Hengqin Line terminus |
| Qingmao (青茂) | 24h | Second Zhuhai crossing, quieter than Gongbei |
From Hong Kong: TurboJet and Cotai Water Jet run high-speed ferries from Sheung Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui to Outer Harbour or Taipa in 55–65 minutes, economy roughly HK$175 weekday / HK$190 weekend (night sailings higher; book ahead on Grand Prix weekend). The HZMB shuttle bus ("Golden Bus") is the budget option, 24 hours: HK$65 day / HK$70 overnight, HK$33/35 concession, 35–40 minutes, every 5 minutes at peak. You clear Hong Kong immigration at the Hong Kong port, ride the bridge, then clear Macau immigration at the Macao port — 1.5–2 hours door to door from central Hong Kong, slower than the ferry and roughly half the price.
From the mainland: walk through Gongbei, or take the LRT Hengqin Line from the Chimelong side; from Guangzhou or Shenzhen, high-speed rail to Zhuhai plus a border walk is standard — see the high-speed rail guide and the Zhuhai guide. The Greater Bay Area guide maps the loop. By air, Macau airport handled about 1.87 million passengers in Q3 2026 across 21 airlines and 39 destinations, with a full-year forecast near 8.14 million — a calmer arrival than Hong Kong.
Two of Macau's biggest annual events overlap this month, pulling in opposite directions — one loud, expensive and hotel-filling; the other free, casual and best after dark. Doing both in one trip is the local move.
Held since 1954 on the Guia street circuit — 6.2 km of ordinary city roads walled off with barriers — it is the only place in the world where Formula cars, GT3 machinery, touring cars and 1,000cc motorcycles race through a working city centre. The 73rd edition runs four days with seven races: FIA FR World Cup, FIA GT World Cup, the Guia Race (Kumho FIA TCR World Tour), FIA F4 World Cup, the 58th Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Greater Bay Area GT Cup (GT4) and the Macau Roadsport Challenge. Thursday and Friday are practice and qualifying; Saturday and Sunday are race days.
| Grandstand | Thu/Fri | Sat/Sun | What you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reservoir Stand (水库看台) | MOP 100 | MOP 400 | Fast section past the reservoir; cheapest race-day seat, unreserved |
| Grand Stand (大看台) | MOP 100 | MOP 750 | Start/finish opposite the pits; covered, near the ferry terminal |
| Lisboa Bend (葡京弯看台) | MOP 100 | MOP 1,200 | Braking zone at the end of the longest straight; the only numbered seats |
Tickets sell through MacauTicket and about 15 outlets in Macau, Hong Kong and the mainland, capped at ten per person, and everyone aged two and over needs a ticket; concessionary seats are MOP 150. Lisboa Bend goes first. The circuit closes major peninsula roads around Guia for four days — buses are rerouted, taxis cannot enter, walking beats driving between Senado Square and the Grand Prix Museum. Stay in Cotai or Taipa and take the LRT in.
The Macao Government Tourism Office lists the 26th Macau Food Festival at Sai Van Lake Square, in front of Macau Tower, for 17 days — 20 November to 6 December 2026, free admission, evening opening. Roughly 150 stalls cover Macanese classics, Portuguese grills, Cantonese roast meats, Southeast Asian street food and desserts: the most efficient way to eat across the city's cuisines in one evening. Go on a weekday — weekends are packed with local families after 19:00. Bring small notes and expect to eat standing.
Also running: the 38th Macao International Music Festival until 29 November, hush! Beach Concerts at Hac Sa on 14–15 November, the Tap Siac Craft Market (19–22 and 26–29 November), the Macau Chocolate Market (6–8 November) and Light Up Macao from 5 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Macau is small, but the harbour between peninsula and Taipa is a real barrier. Group days by side of the water, not by attraction list, and you walk instead of commuting.
Day 1, the peninsula on foot. 09:00 Senado Square (议事亭前地) and the lanes behind it, then 10:00 the Ruins of St. Paul's (大三巴牌坊) — go early, by 11:00 it is shoulder to shoulder — and Mount Fortress with the Macau Museum behind the facade. Lunch in the old town, then 14:30 A-Ma Temple (妈阁庙) at the southern tip, the temple that gave Macau its name. 16:00 Macau Tower: 338 m, decks on levels 58 and 61, MOP 208 at the counter or about MOP 140 booked online, MOP 138 for children 3–11 and seniors 65+. Dinner and neon around Grand Lisboa.
Day 2, Taipa Village and Cotai. 09:30 Rua do Cunha and the surrounding lanes — almond cookies, pork chop buns, egg tarts, colonial villas: the best eating street in Macau. 12:00 the Macao Grand Prix Museum (MOP 80, concession MOP 40; 90 minutes), then Cotai, where the Venetian, Parisian and Londoner are linked by walkways and free shuttles, and teamLab SuperNature (MOP 288 adult, MOP 208 child, 11:00–19:00, last entry 18:15, closed Wednesdays) is the standout non-gaming attraction. 18:00 Sai Van Lake Square — during the festival, that is dinner.
Day 3, Coloane or Hengqin. Bus 21A, 25 or 26 south to Hac Sa Beach (black sand, hush! concerts 14–15 November) and Coloane Village: Lord Stow's Bakery for the original egg tart, Fernando's for a long Portuguese lunch. The Giant Panda Pavilion in Seac Pai Van Park has had no admission charge in recent years but closes one day a week. Alternatively the LRT Hengqin Line crosses to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom — a real border crossing, so your China visa must be in order.
| Mode | Fare | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| LRT (轻轨) | MOP 6–12 by distance; MOP 3–6 with Macau Pass | Taipa, Cotai, airport, Taipa ferry terminal, Barra |
| Public bus | MOP 6 cash (exact change) or MOP 3 with Macau Pass | Everywhere, including Coloane |
| Taxi | MOP 21 flagfall (1,600 m), then MOP 2 per 220 m; MOP 3 per trunk bag; MOP 8 surcharge at airport, ferry, HZMB, Hengqin | Short hops, luggage, late nights; peninsula to Cotai MOP 80–120 |
| Casino shuttle | Free, no purchase or stay required | Ferry terminals and airport to the big resorts |
The LRT does not reach most of the peninsula — plan around that. The Macau Pass is the local stored-value card (7-Eleven, Circle K, ferry terminals; load MOP 50–200): no deposit, halves bus fares and cuts LRT fares in half, which pays for itself on a two-day trip. LRT hours are 06:30–23:15 Monday to Thursday and to 23:59 Friday through Sunday and public holidays. The East Line, which will link Barrier Gate to Taipa Ferry Terminal, is targeted for 2029.
The pataca (MOP) is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at about 1 HKD = 1.03 MOP, and HKD is accepted at par almost everywhere — shops, taxis, restaurants, the food festival — so paying in HKD quietly costs about 3%. Change comes back in patacas, so do not arrive with a large HKD note and expect HKD back; yuan is accepted at bigger establishments at a poor rate. Cards (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, Amex) work in hotels, resorts and mid-range restaurants, and Alipay/WeChat Pay coverage is growing but less universal than on the mainland — small eateries and bus fares are still cash. Carry MOP 200–300 in coins and small notes. Tipping is not expected; most restaurants add 10% service.
Macanese cuisine (澳门土生菜) is the world's first fusion food by accident of history: Portuguese colonists cooking with Chinese ingredients, plus techniques and spices carried from Goa, Malacca and East Africa. It tastes like nothing else in China.
| Dish | Chinese | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Portuguese egg tart | 葡挞 (pútà) | Caramelised custard in laminated pastry; the Cantonese 蛋挞 is smoother and paler |
| Pork chop bun | 猪扒包 (zhū pá bāo) | Pork chop in a crusty Portuguese roll; the benchmark is Chan Kong Kei, Taipa |
| Minchi | 免治 (miǎnzhì) | Minced pork or beef with diced potato and soy, fried egg on top — the home dish |
| African chicken | 非洲鸡 (fēizhōu jī) | Coconut, peanut, chilli and paprika sauce — Portuguese, African, Southeast Asian at once |
| Galinha à portuguesa | 葡国鸡 | Chicken baked with coconut milk, turmeric and potato, often in a clay pot |
| Bacalhau | 马介休 (mǎjièxiū) | Salted cod, usually shredded with potato and onion |
| Serradura | 木糠布甸 | "Sawdust pudding" — cream layered with crushed biscuits |
Where to eat: Lord Stow's Bakery in Coloane Village for the original egg tart (Margaret's Café e Nata near Senado Square is the local alternative), Chan Kong Kei for pork chop buns, Wong Chi Kei for wonton noodles, A Lorcha and Restaurante Litoral for proper Macanese, Fernando's for the long lunch. For ambition, the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong & Macau 2026 gives Macau 21 starred restaurants — two three-star (Jade Dragon at City of Dreams, Robuchon au Dôme at Grand Lisboa), six two-star and 13 one-star — with 59 Macau restaurants listed overall. Book three-star tables weeks ahead.
Cantonese is the street language, Mandarin is understood in tourist-facing places, English works in hotels and resorts. A few words go a long way in taxis and small restaurants.
| English | Mandarin | Cantonese |
|---|---|---|
| Macau | 澳门 Àomén | 澳門 Ou-mun |
| Thank you / excuse me | 谢谢 xièxie | 唔該 m-goi |
| How much? | 多少钱 duōshao qián | 幾多錢 gei-do chin |
| Egg tart | 葡挞 pútà | 葡撻 pou-taat |
| Pork chop bun | 猪扒包 zhū pá bāo | 豬扒包 zyu-paa-baau |
| Border gate | 关闸 Guānzhá | 關閘 Gwaan-zaap |
| Bus stop | 公交站 gōngjiāo zhàn | 巴士站 baa-si zaam |
| Keep the change | 不用找 bùyòng zhǎo | 唔使找 m-sai zaau |
Stay by side of the water: the peninsula (MOP 500–1,500 a night) for colonial streets and walkable sightseeing, Taipa Village (MOP 600–1,400) for the best food street and the LRT, Cotai (MOP 1,500–5,000) for resorts, shows and pools, Coloane (MOP 700–1,800) for beaches and quiet. For Grand Prix weekend (19–22 November) book Cotai or Taipa and ride the LRT: peninsula hotels near the circuit are expensive and noisy, and road closures make taxis unreliable. Rates spike those four days and again for the festival's opening weekend.
| Style | Bed | Food | Daily total* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | MOP 150–300 (hostel) | MOP 100–180 (street food) | MOP 300–500 |
| Mid-range | MOP 700–1,400 (3–4 star) | MOP 250–450 | MOP 1,000–1,900 |
| Comfort | MOP 2,000–5,000 (5 star, Cotai) | MOP 600–1,500 | MOP 2,800–6,000+ |
*Per person per day, excluding flights. Fixed costs: race-day ticket MOP 400–1,200, Macau Tower MOP 208, Grand Prix Museum MOP 80, teamLab MOP 288. The Historic Centre, A-Ma Temple, Senado Square, the food festival and the light festival are free.
Not if you hold a passport from one of the 88 visa-exempt nationalities, which includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, India, Brazil and all EU states. Stays are 30 days by default, 90 for EU/Schengen and certain others, 6 months for British passports, 3 months for Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and New Zealand, 14 days for Brunei and Kazakhstan. Everyone else needs a visa or a MOP 200 entry permit on arrival.
Neither helps. Macau runs its own immigration system, so a Chinese visa is neither required nor sufficient — but leaving the mainland for Macau uses one China visa entry, and the 240-hour visa-free transit applies only to designated mainland ports and regions, not to Macau.
Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; small shops, taxis and market stalls are cash or local QR. Carry MOP 200–400 a day and use BOC or Luso Bank ATMs (fees are typically MOP 20–30 per withdrawal, and your home bank may add more). Alipay and WeChat Pay work in many Macau outlets through the mainland wallets, but tourist-facing shops usually prefer their own QR codes. Hong Kong dollars are accepted nearly everywhere at 1:1 — convenient, and about 3% expensive.
Three nights covers the peninsula, Taipa Village and one Cotai evening without rushing. Two nights is enough for a Hong Kong day trip and the headline sights; four or more lets you add Coloane's beaches and trails, the Grand Prix Museum, teamLab and a proper Michelin dinner. Because Macau is only 33 km², the constraint is walking stamina and the harbour crossing, not distance.
