Kashgar (喀什) sits at 1,289 m on the western edge of the Taklamakan Desert, closer to Bishkek than to Beijing, and it is the last Chinese city before the Karakoram Highway climbs into Pakistan. It has traded for two thousand years and still behaves like it: the old city is not a museum set but a 3.6 km² neighbourhood where 40,000 people live, bake bread and argue about the price of sheep.
Three things changed recently. The Khunjerab Pass has been open year-round since December 2024, so the Pakistan border is no longer a summer-only gamble. A second international route, to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, launched in April 2026. And nationwide, China logged 499 million border crossings in January–August 2026, including 61.29 million foreign nationals (up 19.5%), of whom 23.72 million entered visa-free (up 26.8%) — NIA figures.
One thing most guides bury: you cannot reach the mountains without a border permit. Getting one free, on the day, without an agency, is the difference between a city break and the best road trip in China.
Kashgar is the opposite of the Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai circuit: one place, deep, with a landscape that changes completely inside a two-hour drive.
The border change is the real news: Khunjerab used to run roughly April to November and has operated year-round since December 2024. The inspection station reported more than 40,000 passenger crossings by 21 August 2026 — up 90.4% — with vehicles up 133% and third-country nationals from about 50 countries.
Domestic demand is enormous, foreign demand is not. The prefecture logged roughly 40.3 million visits in January–August 2025 and 36.3 billion yuan in revenue, almost entirely domestic — real infrastructure, thin English. For the regional picture see our Xinjiang travel guide.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Location | Western Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, edge of the Taklamakan, near or bordering eight countries |
| City elevation | 1,289.5 m average |
| Old city | 3.6 km², 5A-rated since 2015, home to more than 40,000 residents |
| Climate | Average 12.6°C; 85.2 mm rain a year; extremes of 39.4°C and −22.3°C |
| Airport | Kashgar Laining International (KHG), a national first-class port |
| Land ports | Khunjerab (Pakistan), Karasu (Tajikistan), Irkeshtam and Torugart (Kyrgyzstan) |
| Heritage | 3 national and 16 regional intangible heritage items; 75 protected sites |
The old city is the reason to come. China's ethnic-affairs authority calls it the largest surviving complex of earthen architecture in the world — a weave of courtyard houses, blind alleys and workshops holding more than 20 specialised bazaars, 47 intangible heritage projects, 28 heritage experience venues and 13 fixed-venue performances. Protection rules took effect on 1 May 2024 under the Kashgar Old City Protection Regulations. Residents still live there, which is what makes it worth visiting — and why you behave like a guest.
Kashgar Laining (KHG) runs domestic trunk routes plus a small international schedule. The workhorse is Urumqi–Kashgar, about 1 hour 50 minutes, dozens of times a day. Nonstops reach Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an and Hangzhou; the Guangzhou flight (CZ3360, 08:00–14:30) is billed as China's longest domestic nonstop and is the easiest way in from the south. Internationally: Bishkek, and Osh since April 2026.
About a dozen trains a day run Urumqi–Kashgar; the fastest takes roughly 11.5 hours, and overnight sleepers arrive in the morning. Book on 12306 with your passport — see the sleeper train guide and the high-speed rail guide.
Kashgar is the Chinese end of the Karakoram Highway and the only land crossing to Pakistan: shared vehicles run Tashkurgan–Khunjerab–Sost. The Kyrgyz passes (Irkeshtam, Torugart) and the Tajik Karasu crossing have their own paperwork.
Karakul Lake, Tashkurgan and Khunjerab all sit inside a border management zone (边境管理区). Chinese citizens need a border pass; foreign nationals need one too, on top of a valid passport and visa. It is checked at the Ghez checkpoint (盖孜) on the G314, and you will be turned back without it. The permit is free by law and normally issued the same day.
The governing text is the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Border Management Regulations, revised 30 November 2022:
Article 26 is a separate trap: the border strip (边境地带) at the frontier itself needs specific approval. The lake and Tashkurgan town are reachable with a pass; the fence line is not.
Do you need an agency? No, but many use one. Agencies charge 100–300 yuan for queueing, translation and transport. That buys convenience, not the permit; with a free morning, do it yourself.
Visa-free transit does not stretch to Xinjiang. The 240-hour scheme runs through 24 provinces and 65 ports for nationals of 57 countries (NIA, 20 August 2026), with the stay area scoped by province. Do not assume it covers a Kashgar entry — confirm with the embassy or airline. See the transit guide and the visa-free guide.
A Pakistani visa is not a Chinese permit. Khunjerab needs both sides' formalities.
Year-round is not guaranteed. Blizzards at 4,693 m still close the road for days. Build slack.
Entry is free — no ticket, no booking. The formal sight is the East Gate opening ceremony (开城仪式) at 10:30, with an evening show in peak season; recent notices report no show on Mondays, so confirm the day before.
| Place | What it is | Practical |
|---|---|---|
| 汗巴扎 (Khan Bazaar) | Main food street: kebabs, samsa, noodles, pomegranate juice | Busiest after 19:00; cash and mobile payment both work |
| 药茶巴扎 | Herb and spice tea stalls, some blending to order | Buy a small bag — Uyghur medicinal tea is the local speciality |
| 土陶巴扎 | Hand-thrown earthenware, workshops sometimes open | Cheaper than the airport |
| 高台民居 | The oldest quarter, houses layered over a cliff-edge lane | Free, but real-name reservation and a daily cap |
| 艾提尕尔清真寺 (Id Kah) | China's largest mosque, founded 1442 | Non-Muslims admitted outside prayer times, modest dress; closed to visitors Fridays; small ticket (reported 30–45 yuan) |
| 香妃园 (Aba Khoja) | The "Fragrant Concubine" tomb complex, 4A-rated | Ticket raised from 30 to 40 yuan in the 2025 municipal adjustment |
| 喀什地区博物馆 | Silk Road material | Free with reservation; closed Mondays |
Two immersive productions, Heartbeat Kashgar (《心动喀什》) and Meet Kashgar (《遇见喀什》), fill an evening; a hop-on shuttle loop runs by the day (reported around 40 yuan) and saves walking in the heat.
Etiquette. Ask before photographing people and accept a no. No photographs inside the mosque during prayer. A doorway is a front door, not an exhibit.
The Sunday animal market (牛羊巴扎) is the least staged thing in Kashgar. Herders drive in sheep, goats, cattle and donkeys, deal in cash, load trucks and leave by early afternoon. Around the pens: knife-sharpeners, naan bakers, samsa sellers, tea stands.
Everything south of the city is one road: the G314, which becomes the Karakoram Highway at the border. It climbs steadily onto the Pamir plateau.
| Stop | Altitude | From Kashgar | Why stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghez checkpoint (盖孜) | ~2,700 m | ~120 km | Border pass inspection — the gate to everything below |
| Karakul Lake (卡拉库里湖) | 3,600 m | 191 km | 10 km² glacial lake, 30 m deep, beneath Muztagh Ata (7,509 m) |
| Tashkurgan (塔什库尔干) | ~3,100 m town; county averages above 3,000 m | ~290 km | Tajik county town, Stone City ruins, Golden Grassland wetlands |
| Khunjerab (红其拉甫) | 4,693 m | ~420 km | China–Pakistan border, the world's highest paved international crossing |
Karakul is the postcard: dark blue water with Muztagh Ata, the "Father of Ice Mountains," rising from the far shore. Kyrgyz herders run yurt camps on the near side; a night there is cold, basic and memorable.
Tashkurgan is a Tajik autonomous county averaging above 3,000 m, with the ruined Silk Road fort of the Stone City (石头城) above the Golden Grassland (金草滩) wetlands. The county publishes altitude safety guidance, including oxygen-equipped hotels.
Khunjerab is the frontier itself at 4,693 m, and the national-gate scenic area has become a domestic destination: more than 420,000 visitors by 19 August 2026, single-day peaks near 7,000, access by online real-name ticket plus shuttle bus — you cannot drive up and walk in.
Altitude, in one line: sleep a night in Kashgar (1,289 m) before driving up, never fly in and go straight to Khunjerab, drink more water than feels necessary, and treat a bad headache at Tashkurgan as a reason to descend, not push on.
| Length | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Old city, Id Kah, museum; bazaars and an evening show; a Karakul day trip and back. | A short stop en route to Urumqi or Pakistan |
| 5 days | Days 1–2 city; day 3 drive to Karakul and overnight in Tashkurgan; day 4 Stone City, Golden Grassland, Khunjerab gate; day 5 return. | The standard Pamir loop |
| 7 days | The loop plus a second old-city day and a side trip toward Yarkand or the desert edge, or a crossing into Pakistan. | Photographers, Silk Road continuations |
Even a Karakul day trip usually passes Ghez. Get the pass regardless of how far you plan to go — it costs nothing.
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Old city entry / High Terrace Houses | Free (reservation required for High Terrace) |
| Id Kah Mosque | ~30–45 yuan (reported) |
| Aba Khoja Mausoleum | 40 yuan |
| Border permit | Free by regulation; agency fee 100–300 yuan |
| Private car, Kashgar–Tashkurgan, per day | Roughly 800–1,500 yuan |
| Khunjerab ticket + shuttle | Online real-name ticket; book ahead |
| Mid-range hotel / old-city meal | 300–600 yuan / 20–60 yuan |
Card acceptance is patchy outside hotels: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly (see the payment guide) and carry cash for the market.
| Dish | Chinese | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Polo | 抓饭 zhuāfàn | Rice cooked with lamb, carrots and cumin oil; the anchor of lunch |
| Laghman | 拉条子 lātiáozi | Hand-pulled noodles with stir-fried lamb and peppers |
| Samsa | 烤包子 kǎo bāozi | Lamb pastry baked in a tandoor; eat them hot |
| Naan | 馕 náng | Stamped round bread, thicker and crisper here than elsewhere |
| Mug meat | 缸子肉 gāngzi ròu | Lamb and broth simmered in a tin mug — a Kashgar breakfast institution |
| Kebabs | 烤羊肉串 kǎo yángròu chuàn | Charcoal-grilled, cumin and chilli |
| Herb tea | 药茶 yàochá | Spiced tea with saffron or rose, sold by the bag |
Breakfast is the meal people remember: lamb broth, naan and tea, eaten standing at a counter at eight in the morning. Wider picture in the China food guide.
Outside hotels, English is thin. Chinese gets you further; a few words of Uyghur get you a smile.

No. The city and old city are open. The permit covers the border zone south and west: Karakul Lake, Tashkurgan county and Khunjerab.
Yourself, at the prefecture or county public security exit-entry office, with passport, visa and hotel registration. It is free by regulation and same-day. Agencies charge 100–300 yuan for convenience.
By road on the G314, about 290 km and five to six hours with stops. There is no railway; arrange a private or shared car in Kashgar, and have the pass before Ghez.
Yes — year-round since December 2024, with 2026 traffic up over 90%. But at 4,693 m snow can still close the road for days.
Passenger traffic crosses, with Chinese formalities on one side and Pakistani formalities at Sost. You need your passport, valid exit status and the Chinese border pass — and conditions change, so confirm in Tashkurgan.
Street crime is rare; the real risks are altitude, heat, dust, distance and paperwork (see the safety guide). Three days covers the city and a lake trip; five covers the full Pamir loop; seven adds the Hexi Corridor and Dunhuang.
