🏙️ Shanghai City Guide 2026
The complete Shanghai travel guide for foreign tourists: from the futuristic Pudong skyline to the lane houses of the French Concession, and the best soup dumplings on earth.
Why Visit Shanghai?
Shanghai isn't just China's biggest city — it's a time machine. One moment you're gazing at the 632-meter Shanghai Tower piercing the clouds; the next, you're wandering narrow longtang alleyways where grandmas gossip over mahjong and laundry hangs overhead.
With 25 million residents, Shanghai is the world's third-largest city, China's financial heart, and arguably the most foreigner-friendly city in China. English signage is everywhere on the metro, international restaurants abound, and the city's 180-year history as a treaty port means it was built for global visitors.

Practical Tips for Foreigners in Shanghai
📋 Pre-Arrival Checklist
- Download and set up Alipay — link your international card and verify your passport. Without it, you can't pay for anything. See our apps guide.
- Install a VPN before you leave home. ExpressVPN, Astrill, and LetsVPN work in 2026. See our VPN guide.
- Get an eSIM (Airalo, Nomad, Holafly) or buy a local SIM at the airport. See our eSIM comparison.
- Download Translation apps: Pleco (dictionary) + Google Translate (offline Chinese pack) or Baidu Translate.
- Save your hotel address in Chinese characters — you'll need it for taxis and immigration forms.
- Check visa requirements: 144-hour transit without visa covers Shanghai + Jiangsu + Zhejiang. See our visa guide.
💡 On-the-Ground Tips
- Toilet paper: Carry it. Public restrooms often don't have it. Also, squat toilets are common — get used to them.
- WiFi: Hotels have good WiFi. Public WiFi requires a Chinese phone number for SMS verification. Your eSIM data is your backup.
- Cash: Almost nobody uses cash anymore. Some places literally can't make change. Alipay/WeChat Pay or nothing.
- Tipping: No tipping culture in China. Not expected, not required. High-end hotels with international service may include a service charge.
- Crossing streets: Shanghai drivers don't always yield to pedestrians. Cross with the crowd, and even on a green man, stay alert for turning vehicles.
- Drinking water: Tap water is NOT drinkable. Boiled water is free at most restaurants. Bottled water costs ¥2-5.
- Emergency numbers: Police 110, Ambulance 120, Fire 119. English-speaking operators are available but may take time.
